The Return of the Author Interviews on TBPL Off the Shelf

After a few month hiatus, I’m once again working on author interviews on TBPL Off the Shelf, the Thunder Bay Public Library’s blog. This month I interviewed Marianne Jones, a local Thunder Bay author. We talk about what inspired her literary novel, Maud and Me, and why painting appears so often in her writing. You can find the interview here.

It also looks like I also neglected to post about the last few interviews here on this blog. In August 2022, I interviewed Brent Scollie, a historical nonfiction writer. In September, we ran two interviews, first with the local author Nancy Mauro, who wrote a fictional tale about the origins of the famous Thunder Bay pastry, the persian. The second interview was with Lorene Shyba and Magda Stroinska, the editor and translator of Перша Книжечка / The Little Book, which is an old Ukrainian reader that was rereleased last year with proceeds helping the Ukrainian people. And finally in October, I interviewed La Carmina about her new book, The Little Book of Satanism.

So that makes this month’s interview with Marianne Jones the ninety-eighth interview on TBPL Off the Shelf! (I think I lost count somewhere along the way – I thought it was the ninety-seventh).

Interview #90

After a few months with no author interviews on TBPL Off the Shelf, the ninetieth is finally here! This time I interviewed Patricia Caine. We talked about transcribing her parents’ stories (her mom’s stories were in Ukrainian), the historical research she did to give those stories local context, and her favourite recipe from her mom (hint: it’s also Ukrainian!)  You can find the interview here.

I’d also like to note that the timing of this interview was coincidental with world events. I approached Patricia earlier this year because I was excited to hear about her experiences growing up with Ukrainian parents, and talk about celebrating holidays that my family celebrates as well. The interview just happened to go live a week after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Interviews 83-86

Oh geeze, I’ve missed posting the author interviews I’ve done on TBPL Off the Shelf since April! So here’s a list of all four, including yesterday’s interview. 🙂

In May I interviewed Elle Andra-Warner about researching historical subjects, travel writing, and the most interesting facts she learned about the lighthouses of the North Short of Lake Superior.

In June I interviewed Eleanor Albanese about what drew her to fiction writing from theatre, how her fiction writing process differs from her theatre process, and the role of midwives in rural Northern Ontario a century ago.

In August I interviewed Roy Blomstrom about writing a wide variety of forms and genres, what drew him to science fiction for his newest novel, and writing a multiverse.

And this month I interviewed Martha Wells about where she got the idea for Murderbot, writing engaging AI characters, and her newest book, Fugitive Telemetry.
